Authentic Blue Lotus

We have finally found her — the true, botanically verified Nymphaea caerulea — the true Sacred Blue Water Lily used by the Egyptian priestesses.

A 2024 study (Liverpool John Moores University) compared verified Nymphaea caerulea specimens (from university herbariums) to 5 "Egyptian blue lotus" products bought online. Result: the concentrations of nuciferine and apomorphine — the two signature alkaloids — in the commercial samples were 100 to 1000 times lower than in the authentic specimens. The majority of "blue lotus" circulating online is in fact Nymphaea alba (European white water lily) or Nymphaea odorata (American white water lily) — visually similar but pharmacologically near-inert.

The common Blue Lotus, the one easily found, is most likely a Nymphaea × nouchali — a very close cousin of the original Nymphaea caerulea. Experientially, both are magnificent mystical flowers. Nymphaea × nouchali offers larger, more fragrant flowers; authentic Nymphaea caerulea offers smaller flowers, rarer, harder to harvest — it takes 4 times more work to obtain 1 kg of dried flowers from the marshes — and its effects are more refined, deeper, more magical.
